Things to expect
- Oozing or light bleeding is normal for the first 1 - 2 days after surgery.
- Pain is normal and should be controllable with the pain medication provided by the doctor.
- Many patients will describe a popping noise in the operated ear directly after surgery, this is normal.
- Packing material may fall out of the operated ear, this is normal.
- Muffled hearing is normal. It will take 1-2 months for the middle ear packing to dissolve.
What to do
- Remove dressing (including the cotton ball if it is present) in 24 hours.
If drainage occurs, it is okay to use a cotton ball over ear canal with bandaid or use new gauze and an ear wrap.
- Keep the operated ear dry.
- Call Dr. York's clinic to make post operative appointment for one week after surgery.
- Call immediately if you experience loud tinnitus, severe vertigo, severe imbalance, or facial weakness.
- Okay to shower. Place cotton ball with vaseline in ear when washing hair to keep ear dry.
- No strenuous physical activity for 2 weeks.
