Dizziness

Dizziness is caused by many things and occurs with many conditions. The first step in the evaluation of dizziness is, like in all conditions, a thorough history to gain an understanding into what the patient is actually experiencing. One of the more common causes of dizziness is known as a "loose crystal". This is when a crystal that your inner ear uses to sense gravity and movement has come loose. For most patients, a good diagnosis can be acheived with the history alone and expensive or uncomfortable tests can be avoided.

Rarely, diseases of the brain or nerves can cause dizziness. Fortunately, this is usually easy to rule out with an MRI targeting the inner ear and brainstem. Frequently, these are also worked up in cooperation with a neurologist. Other testing is sometimes ordered which will stimulate the inner ear (causing dizziness) and then measuring the natural reflexes that happen with the eyes. This can identify which ear is the root cause of the symptoms and can be done before or in conjunction with an MRI.

A hearing test may also provide some clues into what is going on in the inner ear. It is for this reason that a hearing test is usually done on all patients presenting complaining of hearing loss.
