Tinnitus

Ringing in the ears is the most common symptom of hearing loss. Though its direct mechanism is not known, it is a by-product of the loss of hearing. Interestingly, the tone of the perceived sound is usually similar to the frequencies involved in the hearing loss. Hearing loss usually affects ear frequency differently, most of the time only involving the higher frequencies first. This usually results in an interesting phenomenon where a patient feels that they can hear speech well, but simply can't understand what is being said, or sometimes blaming others for mumbling and not pronouncing their words well. This is usually a result of the fact that both men and women's voices are made up of relatively low frequency sounds, while consonants, which separate the voice into intelligable words, tend to live in the higher frequency ranges. As the higher ranges are lost, the consonants are lost first producing this paradox. Fortunately, a well-tuned hearing aid can usually make this better.
