Ear Wax

Ear wax is a natural substance made by cerumenous glands in the mid portion of the external ear canal. It is generally acidic and has anti- microbial properties which combine in order to defend your external ear from infection. Interestingly, variations in wax consistency are observed across ethnic lines indicating a clear predisposition to certain consistencies of ear wax. For the great majority of people, ear wax will be carried outside of the ear canal by the normal migratory pattern of skin growth of the external ear canal. It is for this reason that objects should never be placed into the ear canal, as this will frequently push the wax back in deeper, which leads to its accumulation. If it accumulates enough, this will result in an ear wax impaction.

Many products exist that are effective at dissolving ear wax in the canal. Oil-based drops will simply help make the natural thick consistency of ear wax more fluid. Dr York, however, prefers hydrogen-peroxide based ear drops, such as Debrox. Conversely, one can make their own mixture by combining 50% hydrogen peroxide, 25% white vinegar, 25% distilled water. One should be aware, however, that using either of these drops can worsen the hearing loss, as it frequently causes wax to swell before it dissolves it.
