Reflux

Reflux is one of the more common diseases treated by an ENT. One of the most common symptoms of reflux is heartburn. Only 50% of people who suffer from reflux will actually experience heartburn. Other, less well-known symptoms include the feeling of something caught in the throat, change in voice, throat clearing, or a chronic cough. In the usual workup to identify inflammatory changes related to reflux, frequently an in-clinic procedure will be performed. This is called a fiberoptic nasolaryngoscopy. This typically involves a flexible light cord that the doctor will gently guide through the nose and down the back of the throat in order to visualize the voice box. This is usually very well tolerated with no significant pain.
