Ear Tube Discharge Instructions
Things to expect
- Oozing or light bleeding is normal for the first 1 - 2 days after surgery.
- Mild pain is normal and is controllable with Motrin or Tylenol.
- Ear tubes usually last between 6 months and two years (or 5 to 10 years for the "T-tubes"). Dr. York will see you back intermittently to check on the status of your ear tubes.
- Ear tubes are so small, they are not usually seen when they fall out.
What to do
- Remove the cotton ball from the operated ear/ears on discharge.
- Bathing/Showering and swimming in a clean pool is okay, but no diving below 5 feet without ear plugs. Ear plugs should also be
used when swimming in Oceans, Lakes, and Rivers.
- Call Dr. York's clinic to make a post-operative appointment for four weeks after surgery.
- New ear drainage may be a sign of a new ear infection after ear tubes have been placed. Call Dr. York's office if you experience new ear drainage.
